What I Shed Today

lightening up a little at a time

seven chairs

on March 18, 2014

Today I shed seven chairs. That might sound like a lot (or not). It might sound significant (or not). My own sense of discernment is that, close to an action, it’s often hard to tell what its significance will be. I shed them from the church I work for, so for lightening up our household, it didn’t signify at all. But they were cluttering up a room we need to clear out so an adult education class can meet in it. And things that aren’t getting used, but could be if they were in the right hands (or, in this case, under the right haunches), weigh down my spirit. So taking those chairs to the Habitat for Humanity ReStore might have been the best deed I did today.

It’s got me thinking about the chairs we’ve been shedding from the house—eleven queued up, one already gone—and those we’re keeping. How many chairs, really, do two relatively limber people need? Granted they’re in different rooms and that some (like task chairs) serve special functions … and that we occasionally entertain, and it’s considered hospitable to offer seating … is there some number that’s enough?

Whatever that number is, it’s probably fewer than more.

shedding style: give away
destination: thrift store
