What I Shed Today

lightening up a little at a time

christmas tree candlestand

Black holes, we’re told, are entities in which matter is so densely compressed that enormous gravitational forces let nothing escape, not even a stray sliver of light.

Nimue and I are unpleased to announce the discovery of black holes of clutter. They are created when, in a moment of exasperation, a pseudo-decluttering is achieved through cramming a bunch of clutter into as small a space as possible (as when clearing a table by sweeping everything on it into a box, or piling everything that’s in the way into a corner of the garage).

Almost nothing escapes such a black hole. We have learned, however, that the hole may be approached and entered from an alternate dimension of intentionality. Once inside, one can de-compress the mass one constituent item at a time. I have, for instance, recently extracted a Christmas tree candlestand from one of the black holes of clutter in our garage. The candlestand was set aside to be given away, but was buried before that was accomplished under a crushing weight of bicycle bits, items to be recycled, and boxes “we just might use someday.”

Free, in two senses of the word!

Free, in two senses of the word!

shedding style: give away
destination: thrift store

Comments welcome … what’s one thing you might retrieve from that box you tremble to open?

We have fewer and fewer items hiding in black holes ~ the benefit of downsizing for the past 17 years. But I’ll keep on the look out.

  2. We live beneath one such black hole… but I have started venturing up there and dealing with it one bit at a time. Latest achievement: sent a partially completed patchwork quilt (30 years old) to Australia for a fellow blogger to make use of… well worth every penny of the (surface mail) cost.

  3. […] stumped me with this one, which came out of a “black hole” box. Not from whom it came (that was on the gift tag, still attached), nor when it was given to us […]
